What Is Anxiety? Understanding Anxiety, Your Nervous System, and Why You Feel Anxious

If you’ve ever wondered “What is anxiety?”, “Why do I feel anxious?”, or “Why am I anxious for no reason?”, you’re not alone.

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health concerns worldwide, yet it’s also one of the most misunderstood. Many people believe anxiety means something is wrong with them or that they simply need to “calm down” or “stop worrying.”

But what if anxiety isn’t the problem?

What if anxiety is actually your nervous system trying to protect you?

Understanding what anxiety is—and why it happens—is often the first step towards reducing its impact and developing a healthier relationship with yourself.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is your body’s natural response to the anticipation of danger or uncertainty.

Unlike fear, which responds to an immediate threat, anxiety prepares you for something your brain believes might happen.

Your nervous system is constantly asking one important question:

“Am I safe?”

When the answer feels uncertain, your brain activates a protective response.

This is why anxiety can appear before a job interview, while waiting for a text message, before public speaking, during relationship conflict, or even while lying in bed trying to fall asleep.

The purpose of anxiety isn’t to make your life difficult.

Its purpose is to keep you safe.

What causes anxiety?

There isn’t one single cause of anxiety.

Your nervous system learns from your life experiences.

Past trauma, chronic stress, difficult relationships, bullying, childhood experiences, perfectionism, significant life changes, and ongoing uncertainty can all teach your brain to become more alert to potential danger.

Over time, your nervous system becomes increasingly skilled at predicting situations that might lead to emotional or physical pain.

Its intention is protective.

It wants to prevent you from being hurt again.

Understanding this can completely change the way you view anxiety.

Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?”, you might begin asking, “What is my nervous system trying to protect me from?”

Anxiety symptoms: Why does anxiety affect the whole body?

Many people think anxiety is simply excessive worrying.

In reality, anxiety affects your whole nervous system.

Common anxiety symptoms include:

  • Racing heart or heart palpitations

  • Tight chest or difficulty taking a deep breath

  • Butterflies or knots in your stomach

  • Muscle tension

  • Shaking or feeling restless

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Constant overthinking

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Feeling overwhelmed

  • Irritability

  • Feeling on edge or unable to relax

  • Panic attacks or sudden waves of intense fear

These physical symptoms of anxiety aren’t signs that you’re weak.

They’re signs that your nervous system believes it needs to prepare you for danger.

Why do I feel anxious when nothing is wrong?

This is one of the most common questions people ask.

The answer lies in how your nervous system works.

Your brain doesn’t simply react to what’s happening now.

It predicts what could happen based on your previous experiences.

If you’ve experienced criticism, rejection, abandonment, trauma, loss, or unpredictability, your nervous system may become more sensitive to situations that resemble those earlier experiences.

Sometimes the alarm is accurate.

Sometimes it’s overprotective.

Like a smoke detector that’s become too sensitive, it sounds the alarm even when there’s no real fire.

That doesn’t mean it’s broken.

It means it’s trying very hard to keep you safe.

Fight, flight, freeze, and anxiety

When your nervous system detects possible danger, it activates your survival responses.

These include:

  • Fight – becoming defensive, angry, or argumentative.

  • Flight – avoiding situations, staying busy, or wanting to escape.

  • Freeze – feeling stuck, numb, unable to think, or disconnected.

  • Fawn – prioritising other people’s needs to reduce conflict or stay safe.

These aren’t personality flaws.

They’re protective strategies your nervous system has developed over time.

Anxiety isn’t your identity

One of the biggest misconceptions is believing, “I’m just an anxious person.”

Anxiety is something you experience.

It isn’t who you are.

Your nervous system has learned certain protective patterns, often because they once helped you cope.

The goal isn’t to eliminate anxiety completely.

The goal is to understand it, recognise when it’s helping, and notice when it’s responding to old patterns rather than present-day reality.

How to deal with anxiety

Many people spend years trying to get rid of anxiety.

They fight it, judge it, distract themselves from it, or criticise themselves for feeling it.

Often, that struggle creates even more anxiety.

A different approach is to become curious.

Instead of asking:

“How do I stop feeling anxious?”

Try asking:

  • What is my anxiety trying to protect me from?

  • What does my body need right now?

  • Is this happening now, or is my brain predicting something that might happen?

  • What would help my nervous system feel safer in this moment?

Curiosity helps you understand your anxiety rather than battling it.

A different way of understanding anxiety

At Terra Soul Therapies, we don’t see anxiety as something that needs to be fought or “fixed.”

We see it as information.

Information about your nervous system.

Information about your experiences.

Information about the ways you’ve learned to stay safe.

When you begin listening to anxiety with curiosity instead of fear, you often discover that beneath it are important needs, emotions, and stories waiting to be understood.

Anxiety isn’t your enemy.

It’s a protective response that sometimes becomes overprotective.

And when you understand that, everything begins to change.
